“Some of the best books are the ones that destroy you because they ultimately change the fabric of who you are.”
― Lynn Painter, Trust Fall

Book Synopsis:

Julia is a small-town girl who loves her peaceful life. But when her family inherit a not-so-small fortune from her secret multi-millionaire neighbour, she is swept away to live in New York City and attend an elite private school for the super-rich.

It should be a dream come true, but Julia is struggling to fit in at her new school, and even worse, she’s failing. Enter Damion, the mysterious and handsome tutor who is hired to get Julia back on track. Except Damion has a secret: he is a relative of the man who left everything to Julia’s family, and he doesn’t buy for a second that his Great-uncle would leave his fortune to strangers instead of family.

Damion schemes to earn Julia’s trust, so he can uncover what really happened. But the more time Damion spends with Julia, the more his plan begins to backfire, as he soon starts falling for her.

As Damion and Julia work to figure out where they belong, will they be able to see past their differences and lean into their feelings, or will the trust Damion has worked so hard to gain lead everything to fall apart?

My Review:

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for what seems like an eternity. So, when I finally got my hands on it, I was over the moon. Here are my honest thoughts on this new Lynn Painter book!

This book was so easy to read, fast-paced, and full of witty banter that kept me reading. The writing style isn’t particularly special in any way. It’s not extremely poetic and it doesn’t use a bunch of  big words, but I still enjoyed it. This book has dual POV, meaning we hear from both main characters, and it added so much to the story! I loved reading both of their perspectives, looking at both their feelings and understanding their characters so much more because of it!

The enemies to lovers vibe in this book was really good. It was very much the classic Lynn Painter style that I’ve come to know and love. I did feel that at times the love interest’s mood swung wildly, kind and likeable one moment, then mean and cold the next. Personally, I felt that could have been a bit smoother, but I still liked it. The kissing, though, was nothing short of extraordinary.

The banter in this book was really fun to read. But, sadly, it kinda left me wanting more, in terms of the emotional depth that I wanted them to have. It felt very packed with innuendo, which was funny most of the time but also felt a little unnecessary and even a bit uncomfortable at times. I understand that the banter really matched the main character’s personality, but still, it could have been toned down just a little bit. But I still enjoyed it, and it felt like very stereotypical YA banter, light and funny.

Let’s talk about the content in this book. As I already mentioned, this book has a lot of innuendo and crude jokes throughout. But it’s all talk, nothing actually happens in this book except kissing. Something that really bothered me about this book (in fact about every Lynn Painter book) is the amount of language that it has. And I don’t mean mild swearing. I mean the f-word. It was so over the top and frankly it was extremely annoying. Other than that, there isn’t much to note. There are some bad family dynamics and some emotional themes. And there is the very present theme of bullying, which was sad to read about.

Even though nothing happens beyond kissing, I would say that because of the amount of innuendo and swearing, this book would be best for ages 14+.

So if you’re looking for an easy-to-read, fun fall read, then this might be the book for you! Just beware going into it that there is a lot of language in this book, and that the banter is better suited for older teens. I’m glad that I could find a sweet fall romance to add to my list of fall reads!

Happy Reading,
Ava
