~ My Book Review ~
Some books make you laugh, some make you cry, and some stay in your heart forever, this one does all three.
When I first read, “Where the Red Fern Grows” a few years ago, I had no idea it would still be on my mind to this day.
This story is definitely a tearjerker. It’s filled with loss and the growing pains that come with life, but it’s also full of joy and packed with powerful lessons. As you watch the main character, Billy, learn not to give up, to protect those he loves most, and to trust in his faith, you might find yourself reflecting on your own life too.
At the beginning of the story, Billy is just a young boy, relying on his parents and pouting when his family can’t afford to buy him his dogs. But soon he learns that hard work can take you far. Through raising and caring for Old Dan and Little Ann, he discovers responsibility, compassion, and perseverance. He also grows in his faith and learns to accept life’s hardships, recognizing answered prayers and the blessings God has given him.
Wilson Rawls’ writing style is simple yet powerful. It captures Billy’s voice perfectly and pulls you right into his world. His descriptions are vivid without feeling heavy, though at times the story can be a bit gory. Since the book was written many years ago, some of the language may feel outdated or even offensive, but the heart of the story remains timeless.
This is a book I’ll never forget. It holds a permanent place in my heart. For anyone looking for a heartfelt adventure or just a meaningful read, I truly believe, “Where the Red Fern Grows” is worth picking up. Who knows, maybe it will hold a special place in your heart like it does mine.
So grab your tissues, pour yourself a cup of peppermint tea, and snuggle under a fuzzy blanket. You won’t regret diving into this unforgettable story.
Happy Reading,
Ava
