“You’re sunkissed,” Brooks said, his eyes traveling my face. “What?” Hearing Brooks say the word kiss in any form made my stomach flutter. “My mom always tells me that’s the nice way to say sunburned.” He held his suntanned arm next to my pink one.”

Book Synopsis:
Will the stars align?
Avery has always used music as an escape. But after her best friend betrays her, even her perfectly curated playlists can’t help her forget what happened. To make matters worse, her parents have dragged her and her social-media-obsessed sister to a remote family camp for two months of “fun.” Just when Avery is ready to give up on the summer altogether, she meets Brooks—mysterious, frustratingly charming Brooks—who just happens to be on staff—which means he’s off-limits.
What starts as a disaster turns into . . . something else. As the outside world falls away, Avery embarks on a journey of self-discovery. And when Brooks offers her the chance of a lifetime, she must figure out how far is she willing to go to find out what she wants and who she wants to be.
Fan favourite Kasie West is back with another unforgettable summer romance that reminds us falling in love is full of wonder, heartache, and—most of all—surprises.
Sunkissed: Review
I needed a bit of sun and summer in these cold winter months that just don’t seem to end, and this book gave me just that. Sunkissed is a great summer read, but honestly, I think it’s a good read for anyone looking for a clean, fun, sunny story.
I really liked the characters in this book. It was cool to see the main character grow throughout the story, discovering what she really wants in life and realizing that she can do more than she ever imagined. And all the friends she made throughout were so fun, it made me smile every time they entered the story.
If I’m being honest, it took time for me to fully fall for the love interest. But once I got to know him more, I grew to like him a lot. He has some baggage (I mean, we all do), and he has to learn to let go. That’s something I think we all need to do.
The romance was really good as well. The meet-cute was funny and sweet. I liked how it took time for them to fall for each other, partly because they shouldn’t be spending time together (camp rules…), but also because they don’t rush into it. They get to know each other first, and I really like that. I also like that their relationship isn’t perfect. It has its ups and downs, like any real relationship, and that made it feel much more real.
One of the things I LOVED about this book was the amazing summer vibes it gave. It made me miss summer so much, and I can’t wait for those warm months that I know are ahead (even though it doesn’t feel like it right now). The summer camp setting was so fun, and the author did such a good job of making it feel real. I loved the amount of detail she put into the camp, with all its activities and small meaningful places that show up in the story. (The details never felt like too much.)
The writing was easy to read, and I flew through this book. I couldn’t put it down. The writing style wasn’t particularly poetic, but it wasn’t bland either. It was a perfect in-between.
I really liked the main character’s voice throughout the book. You can see her true colours even when she isn’t showing them to the people around her. You can see her internal struggle as she tries to figure out who she wants to be, while falling in love, dealing with her friend’s betrayal, and processing her heartbreak.
This book was clean, with no strong language (just some mild profanity here and there), and it had no sexual content other than kissing and one or two random comments that bordered on inappropriate but never went too far. I was really happy to find a great summer read that is clean and doesn’t include strong swearing.
I would suggest this book to anyone looking for a fun romance that has amazing summer vibes and a sweet love story. I would say that anyone over 12 would be okay to read this book, and I give it a 4.5/5 star rating.
So grab a copy of Sunkissed and get ready for lots of laughs, some squeals of delight, and plenty of scenes that will have your feet kicking.
Happy reading,
Ava
